drurvashibhushan

As parents, we prioritize the oral health of our children, and sometimes, dental issues may arise that require specialized treatment. One such treatment is root canal treatment (RCT), which, although commonly associated with adults, can also be necessary for children. In this blog post, we will explore the topic of root canal treatment in children, discussing its importance, procedure and safety. By gaining a better understanding of this dental procedure, you can make informed decisions and ensure the well-being of your child's oral health.

Importance of RCT in kids:

Cavity progression in kids is faster than adults due to thin enamel and often unrestrained sugar in diet. If the tooth decay or caries reaches the innermost part of the tooth - that is the PULP, it can lead to pain, swelling, abscess, difficulty in eating, sleeping and such consequences. If infection is not controlled, it can also damage the permanent tooth developing below the milk tooth. In such cases, Root canal treatment is a viable option to treat the offending tooth. This will help preserve it in the mouth till the time it is supposed to shed and prevent many untoward sequelae/consequences.

Procedure:

It requires numbing the tooth by giving local anaesthesia, followed by gaining access to the infected pulp, removing it and then cleaning and disinfecting the entire tooth including the root canals. The empty root canals and pulp space is then filled with a biocompatible and bactericidal filling material. The tooth is then capped or crowned to secure it for future.

Often parents ask us about the safety of RCT in kids; with the apprehension of the effects it may have on developing permanent teeth. RCT in kids is absolutely safe as per the highest level of evidence in scientific studies. It can be done in kids if needed irrespective of age. A timely done RCT can prevent infection from spreading to permanent tooth or early loss of milk tooth.

The procedure make take 1/2/3 sittings depending upon the extent of infection/ presence of any swelling/ cooperation of the child.

Our clinic is equipped with a ceiling mounted TV and Happy Gas/ Conscious Sedation facility to make this procedure simple for your child.

Remember, early intervention and proper oral hygiene practices are key to preserving your child's dental health. If you suspect your child may require a root canal treatment, consult a qualified pediatric dentist who can provide the appropriate diagnosis and guide you through the treatment journey.
