Dental visits can be intimidating for some children, causing anxiety and fear that make the experience unpleasant for both the child and their parents. To ease this, we offer conscious sedation, also known as laughing gas or happy gas, a safe and effective sedation method.
Understanding laughing gas
Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a colourless and odourless gas that has been used in dentistry for many years. It is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask placed over the child’s nose. Nitrous oxide is considered safe and well-tolerated by most children, which makes it a popular choice for dental procedures.
Easing anxiety and fear
One of the biggest advantages of laughing gas in pediatric dentistry is its ability to reduce anxiety and fear. Nitrous oxide has a calming effect, helping children feel more relaxed and at ease throughout their visit. This is especially helpful for children who have had negative experiences in the past or who have a fear of the dentist.
Quick and easy to give
Giving laughing gas is simple. The mask is placed over the child’s nose, and they are asked to breathe normally. Within minutes, the nitrous oxide takes effect, bringing feelings of warmth, lightness and relaxation. When the procedure is complete, the gas is stopped and the effects wear off quickly, so children can return to their usual activities without any lingering drowsiness.
Adjustable to each child
The level of sedation can be adjusted to each child’s needs. The doctor controls the amount of nitrous oxide given, keeping the child comfortable and relaxed while still responsive and cooperative. This allows a personalised approach that takes into account the child’s age, temperament and the complexity of the dental work.
Safety and minimal side effects
Laughing gas is considered a safe sedation option when given by trained dental professionals. It has a long record of use in dentistry and is well-tolerated by children. Unlike other forms of sedation, it wears off quickly, so children recover rapidly. Side effects are minimal and rare; the most common are mild nausea or dizziness, which usually settle shortly after the gas is stopped.
Positive dental experiences for the future
By making dental visits positive and stress-free, conscious sedation helps children develop a better attitude towards oral health and dentistry as they grow. Reducing fear and anxiety lets children build trust with their dentist and encourages regular visits, which are crucial for good oral health.

Laughing gas has changed the way dental procedures are approached for children, creating a calmer, more comfortable environment for young patients.
